The Story of the Town of Irmo, South Carolina
Irmo’s story starts back in the late 1800s, when it served as a water and refueling stop for trains traveling the Columbia, Newberry, and Laurens Railroads. By 1890, the settlement had grown and on December 24 the town was officially incorporated.
The name is a portmanteau of two local railroad officials, C. J. Iredell and Mr. Moseley, by taking the first two letters of each of their names, the town was born.
Today, Irmo remains a small town, although it has grown from the sleepy railroad outpost of the past into a vibrant community. For over 50 years the town has hosted the Okra Strut, a tradition which continues today with live music, food, vendors, and fun.
